Rose was a postgraduate student on the Oxford Interdisciplinary Bioscience DTP and a partner student between the Department of Plant Sciences and Diamond Light Source, a synchrotron facility based at Harwell Campus. Rose graduated with a Master’s in Chemistry in 2018 and her research interests are in the use of analytical chemistry and spectroscopy within plant sciences.
Rose’s project in the Preston Lab involved studying the chemistry of the metal hyperaccumulator plant Noccaea caerulescens to understand how hyperaccumulated metal, specifically zinc, can provide a defence against the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae. In particular, Rose uses synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence imaging to study the speciation and distribution of zinc, respectively. Complementary techniques used in her project include Raman microspectroscopy, metabolomics and microscopy.
Outside of the lab, Rose enjoys baking, video games, reading and exploring the countryside.
